Nat Geo’s new docuseries Activate: The Global Citizen Movement focuses on extreme poverty, inequality and sustainability issues to mobilize global citizens to drive meaningful and lasting change. On Wednesday (Sept. 4), Billboard can exclusively reveal a preview of the first episode featuring Becky G.
Presented by National Geographic and Procter & Gamble, and co-produced by Global Citizen and RadicalMedia, the six-part documentary series will feature artist-activists including Becky, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Hugh Jackman, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Rachel Brosnahan, Darren Criss and Uzo Aduba, to name a few.
Each episode, according to an official statement, will “delve into a different issue connected to the root causes of extreme poverty, chronicling real-life stories and galvanizing calls to action.”
In the premiere episode titled Activate: Eradicating Extreme Poverty, the Mexican-American singer opens up about being homeless and the challenges she faced as a woman in the music industry. She also talks about the importance of gender equality to ending extreme poverty and travels to Mexico to mobilize people to support women-owned businesses and break the cycle of poverty.
The first episode also features Jackman and Chopra Jonas, who, like Becky, join Global Citizen in campaigns to push world leaders into enacting policy changes that would end extreme poverty around the globe.
Activate: The Global Citizen Movement premieres at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday in the U.S. and will air globally on National Geographic in 172 countries and 43 languages.
