Alicia Machado, Residente & More Latin Artists React to Donald Trump’s Election Win

People all over the world watched as Donald Trump slowly collected enough electoral votes to become the next president of the United States in the early morning of Nov. 9.

After Donald Trump was officially declared as the winner of the 2016 presidential elections, Latin acts such as Alicia Machado, who was allegedly called Miss Piggy by the Republican candidate during her Miss Universe win in 1996, Calle 13‘s Residente and Carla Morrison took to social media to express their shock at the result.

Today I woke up motivated… Why? More important than who is or is not president, is our response to the things we agree with AND those we oppose. Though we may be divided in opinion and political perspective, we should be united in resilience and hope for the future. A future where the divides of race/origin, gender, religion, social and economic status, and political party preference are only seen in the rear view mirror of a progressive nation which continues to stand at the defense of what is just, FOR ALL. My heart hurts for those who are currently in fear because our nation was never intended to be one motivated by fear but by FREEDOM. I write this post, in a form of self-affirmation of sorts, not to add to the pile of opinions being posted today but to remind us all that we STILL live in the land of the free where thankfully the people do have the freedom of speech, the freedom to peacefully protest, the privilege to contribute to our communities, individually and collectively, in one hundred and one ways, and the right to elect a president by majority as the country has once again this term… It is OUR job to keep it that way! We have all the resources in the world to support what we believe in and make known with all our efforts what needs to be better. So today if you feel well-represented, go out and enjoy the liberties of our country. And if you feel mis-represented, go out and be the change you’d like to see in the world. Let’s put anger, frustration, ego, and all division aside and go out and BE better because we can.
