Alex Sensation chatted with Billboard’s Griselda Flores and Justino Aguila on the red carpet at the Billboard Latin Music Awards on Thursday, where he discussed the growing embrace of Latin music worldwide and new Latin artists he is currently inspired by.
Asked how he feels about streaming making Latin music available everywhere, Sensation says, “I love it. I think our music is reaching new frontiers.” He goes on to explain that when he travels to DJ in locations where people don’t typically listen to Latin music, he is pleasantly surprised when audiences request reggaeton.
“Reggaeton [is] everywhere now,” he says. “Even in Miami, the Miami clubs where there usually was just like house music or hip-hop, now you hear reggaeton, you hear Spanish trap, and you hear the rest of the music…we’re right in there with everyone else.”
Sensation also talks about the plethora of crossover collaborations, with artists such as Justin Bieber jumping on Spanish-language songs. “It’s beautiful to see everyone coming together and expressing themselves musically,” he tells Billboard. “I think it’s been a long time. Everyone’s been waiting for this…I’ve been rooting for this since the early 2000s.”
The DJ also shares which new artists he is loving at the moment, saying: “Right now I have my eye on Ozuna, I think he’s wonderful. And Bad Bunny, of course. And J Balvin keeps on setting that bar higher and higher every year. And I’m very proud to see them grow…When I see them flourish and take off as huge artists, it’s amazing.”
