With the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia about to kick off, we’ve gathered together the songs that pay tribute to Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese national teams. Vamos!
“Bota Fé,” Samba a la Carte
This breezy samba anthem demands respect for Brazil’s players in yellow, name-checking national heroes Pelé, de Garrincha, Romário, Ronaldo and Neymar.
Brazilian beer Brahma produced this song with the well-known Brazilian singers Iza and Daniela Mercury. The track reworks the company’s 1994 soccer-themed jingle for 2018 fans.
“Larga o Arco,” Leo Justi
Nike uses music by “heavy baile” artist Leo Justi for “Larga o Ac?o” to pump up its Brazilian 2018 World Cup spot. The clip features members of the Brazilian team and young street players who are all psyched to seek revenge for Brazil’s loss on their home turf to Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final.
“Hoy Acá en el Baile,” El Pepo
Cumbia artist El Pepo adapted his song “Hoy Acá en el Baile” with futbol-ready lyrics. Argentine fans have adopted it as their go-to-goal anthem.
“Yo Te Amo Argentina,” Various Artists
A group of Argentine artists who created a viral hit for the 2014 Brazil World Cup (“Decime Qué Se Siente”) have come back together to cheer on the national team during the Russia championship.
The title of the song says it all.
“Love” Sebastián Yatra and Gianluca Vacchi
Colombian singer Sebastian Yatra is headed to Russia as a fan. As a warm-up, he expressed his love of futbol with a song, together with Italian millionaire-turned-Instagram star Gianluca Vacchi.
“El Gladiador Mexicano: Vamos México,” Maná
Maná’s musical stamp is all over the music video for their celebratory anthem “El Gladiador Mexicano: Vamos México.”
“Vamos Por La Estrella”, Paty Cantú, Kap G, Sofia Reyes
All three artists recognize the importance of one of the most important sporting events worldwide, and join the Mexican National Soccer Team on its way to the 2018 World Cup.
“Sube la Marea,” Rubén Blades, Erika Ender, Kafu Banton, Omar Alfanno, Nando Boom and more artists
Rubén Blades, Erika Ender, Kafu Banton, Omar Alfanno, Nando Boom and other Panamanian artists recorded the euphoric “Sube la Marea” celebrating Panama’s first-ever participation in a World Cup. The track was recorded for Copa Airlines as a send-off for the national team, known as la marea roja (the red tide). And of course, this “tide” swells with national pride (“My name is Panama,” screams the chorus.)
“Otra Estrella en Tu Corazón,” Sergio Ramos and Demarco Flamenco
This song for the Spanish team is sung by one of the players. Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos teamed up with artist Demarco Flamenco for “Otra Estrella en Tu Corazón” (“Another Star in Your Heart”), the Spanish national team’s official song.
“Llegamos los Peruanos,” Marco Romero
Singer-Songwriter Marco Romero wrote this tribute to the Peruvian team.
The Costa Rican group Percance pays homage to their country’s team of “mata gigantes” (giant killers).
“Conquista o Sonho,” various artists
The Portuguese Football Federation has created a World Cup-season touring musical theater review for kids with an inspirational message (“Follow Your Dream)”. A song from the show was released with a cute animated video that spotlight Portuguese players in action.
