Everything is coming up Simpson!
Not only is Sturgill Simpson nominated in two categories at the Grammy Awards this year, but the country singer-songwriter was the first musical act of 2017 on Saturday Light Live‘s January 14 episode.
Simpson hasn’t been shy about his excitement for this SNL debut—he’s been blowing up Twitter with photos and clips teasing his appearance. For the big night, Simpson chose “Keep It Between the Lines” with a killer horn section and a TV-friendly version of hard-rocking “Call to Arms.”
Though SNL is historically light on country acts, Simpson’s in good company: Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and 2009’s still-fairly-country-at-the-time Taylor Swift are among his predecessors.
Enjoy Simpson’s brassy country tunes? You’re likely to see him again soon—as soon as the Grammy Awards on Feb. 12th, considering his third studio album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Country Album.
