Maren Morris felt the special qualities of “My Church” as soon as she heard the first recording of the track — and she was able to share that feeling with The Tonight Show audience on Monday night.
“Hearing the demo for the first time, it felt like the earth shook for a second,” she told Billboard earlier this year. “When I thought of the title, I knew it would work: It was simple but universal. It’s not just that it’s fun to sing along to — it’s about finding that feeling of inspiration and peace.”
Listeners agreed with her, and the track climbed all the way to No. 5 on the Hot Country Songs chart. “The response that came in was astounding,” she remembered. “I thought there was a glitch when they told me that in two or three weeks ‘My Church’ hit a million streams.”
Morris released her debut album, Hero, last Friday, and on Monday, she performed her hit single on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The singer will also get more national airtime on Wednesday, when she joins Keith Urban and Brett Eldredge onstage at the CMT Music Awards.
