With a mix of female-fronted acts, down-home pop and some good ole ’00s rap (see Eminem), country duo Maddie & Tae curated a Takeover Tuesdays playlist exclusively for Billboard. The songs? Well, let’s just say they’ll make you feel…forever young.
1. “Fly” – Maddie & Tae
We wrote this to remind ourselves, no matter how dark it seems, don’t give up. When you’re sure it’s going to fall apart, just hold on! Because when you’re falling apart, that’s when it seems you do start to fly. Hard to believe sometimes, but man, when we needed encouragement, we thought about this song – and kept going!
2. “Young Blood” – Bea Miller
Bea Miller is so young, slightly dark, and absolutely spot on about what it means to be young, here, figuring things out.
3. “Follow Your Arrow”- Kacey Musgraves
This was one of our favorite songs to listen to when we were finding our way, chasing our dreams. I love how this song just says “do what you want and whatever makes you happy.” It’s fun, young, and makes you feel like you can go after anything you want in life! Being different separates you from the rest of the world and this song says that so perfectly!
4. “It’s Tricky” – Run-D.M.C.
Cut, scratch, beat. They know how to rhyme, break it down, throw truth. This is so old school for us, but man, drop the needle and you feel good…instant!
5. “Sin Wagon” – Dixie Chicks
Natalie Maines‘ voice is a buzz saw: it cuts through anything and feels so incredible when you hear it. Everything they do is incredible, but this one – it’s like life exploding in the best way. We’re pretty good girls, but everyone’s got a little bit of “Sin Wagon” inside.
6. “Keep Your Eyes Open” – NEEDTOBREATHE
This song is all about getting out of your comfort zone and chasing whatever dreams you have. There is a very youthful, encouraging underlying message.
7. “Baby Girl” – Sugarland
This song describes exactly what it’s like to be young and trying to figure things out on your own for the first time. It takes us back to that exact moment where we took that leap of faith to chase our dreams.
8. “I’m Like A Bird” – Nelly Furtado
One of the coolest song structures ever. She figures out how to create a vocal unlike any other, and then the melody keeps lifting you up! Unforgettable.
9. “Lose Yourself” – Eminem
From the very first notes, this builds… and builds… and builds. But when you listen, you think you can take down anything. It’s like superpowers with a beat that’s all about anticipation.
Funk! Pop! Wow! These guys have the most danceable, grab your feet-able song out there. You put this one and you just start moving. When you’re needing to pick it up a bit, this is the answer.
11. “Go Rest High On That Mountain” – Vince Gill
Vince wrote this when his brother died to give him peace in his journey. It’s as beautiful and sad as anything ever written. Those three-part harmonies – when they turn in on each other – that’s what makes country music incredible!
12. “Up!” – Shania Twain
Few things are as much fine… as pump you up as this song! Shania understood everything about being alive, being fun, being strong – and if you put this on, you can’t help but jump around.
