British singer-songwriter Lucie Silvas is making a triumphant return with her fourth album, E.G.O. Set to be released Aug. 24, the LP kicks off with an uplifting track titled “Kite,” premiering on Billboard today (May 31).
Combining her poignant songwriting with her love of girl power, Silvas felt the best way to help listeners feel her personal strength was through a high-flying metaphor.
“I wanted to capture a woman’s inability to be held down,” Silvas told Billboard of the inspiration for the “Kite” angle of the song. “That even without any real sense of direction of where she is going, she wants to be free to just go wherever the wind takes her. Her spirit can get her in trouble sometimes, but it’s what keeps her feeling alive.”
“Kite” is both the lead single and opening song of the 12-song E.G.O., all of which Silvas co-penned. The album — whose title is an acronym for Everybody Gets Off — sees Silvas explore both her influences and her vulnerability while maintaining a soul-funk, country-tinged vibe, making for a diverse collection of thoughtful tunes.
Though she decided to name the album after the title track that addresses the conceited tendencies of fame, Silvas felt quite liberated during the entire creation process of E.G.O.?, especially writing “Kite.”
“I had the musical freedom to go where I wanted, and that’s what made me happy,” she asserts. “It felt nostalgic to relive my childhood influences in some of these songs, and it’s empowering to put my own spin on them.”
