Despite singing the breakup blues under different kinds of cobalt stage lights, Clarkson delivered a swanky and supple performance as the perfect antidote for a broken heart. It’s the spot-on second dose following her unplugged cover of Patsy Cline‘s “She’s Got You” on Wednesday.
“Blue/ Oh, so lonesome for you/ Why can’t you be blue over me?” she crooned with her backing band Y’all aiding the tender manifesto.

“Blue” was originally performed by songwriter and longtime radio host Bill Mack, who died last August due to COVID-19 and underlying health issues, in 1958. Rimes recorded the song for her 1996 debut album, Blue, when she was just 13 years old, and the cover earned her a 1997 Grammy Award for best female country vocal performance (she also took home the award for best new artist that year) and two 1997 ACM Awards for song and single of the year. “Blue” also hit No. 10 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts in 1996.
