Keith Urban surprised the crowd during Foy Vance’s 2019 AmericanaFest set on Friday evening (Sept. 13). Midway into his performance, Vance prefaced the upcoming collaboration by singing Urban’s praises.
“I’m just going to go ahead and say it: I didn’t know I needed this guy in my life until I met him,” Vance told a packed room at Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom. “And now that I met him, I can’t fuckin’ do without him. Please welcome Keith Urban.”
After screams from the audience and a quick hug, the pair segued into Vance’s stirring ballad “Burden,” featured on the Irish singer-songwriter’s 2016 album The Wild Swan. While the Irishman sat down at the keyboard, Urban assisted on electric guitar and vocals beside him. With additional backing harmonies from Vance’s band, the nearly eight-minute collaboration captivated the festival crowd.
Urban ended the riveting performance with a rave review of Vance and the other musicians on stage. “That’s a fine-ass band,” he said. Equally impressed with Urban, Vance then joked, “Somebody’s gonna lose their job up in here.”
Friday evening was far from the first time the pair have collaborated. Earlier this year, Urban and Vance teamed up for a special video of “Burden.” In April, Urban performed the song at the Academy of Country Music Awards.
“Spent some time in studio with the wildly and celestially talented @foyvance – they don’t make em like him anymore…. I don’t even think it’s legal!!!” Urban captioned a clip on social media.
