Kasey Lansdale takes some motherly advice on the infectious new single “Good Girl.” Produced by Chad Mauldin, Lansdale’s powerful belt strikes a chord alongside mesmerizing pedal steel as she sings of relationship lessons she’s learned the hard way.
“I remember as a young girl my mother said to me/ Bad boys are a good time but eventually they’ll leave/ Find yourself a good boy who won’t break your heart,” she croons on the song’s opening verse.
On the accompanying music video, which Billboard premieres below today (Jan. 10), the Texas native shows the two sides of a woman as she falls for a “bad guy” and subsequently a “good guy.” Directed by Phillip Guzman (Eli Young Band, Josh Abbott Band), Lansdale is at a crossroads standing in the middle of the highway before driving the open road and away from a relationship.
“A friend of mine, Judy Pancoast, had a song she had written back in the ‘90s that was sitting in the proverbial drawer,” Lansdale tells Billboard. “She sent it to me, and it was a little dated, but the idea was fantastic. She was generous enough to let me take a stab at it, so I changed some lyrics and turned it into more of a rocking/swampy tune with the help of Lucas Bakker (Wyclef Jean, Dirty Heads).
“Then, when I went into the studio with Chad Mauldin he took it up another notch, gave it a more driving beat, and we really came together to find the sound of ‘Good Girl.’ I am very proud of the evolution of this song, and so energized to see it have new life and a really fun video to tell its story.”
