“Are You Sure,” a 1965 Willie Nelson track (originally on Country Willie — His Own Songs), gets a refresh on Kacey Musgraves’ 2015 Pageant Material album. Though the new arrangement feels a little bit dreamier, Nelson and Musgraves’ lonesome-and-heartbroken duet doesn’t stray too far from the original recording of the song — and their new video for “Are You Sure” keeps up with its classic country vibe.
In the video, Nelson and Musgraves are shown nursing drinks alone at the bar, trading verses and joining each other on stage, washed in hazy pink light as they croon the ballad.
Musgraves, a longtime fan of Nelson’s “Are You Sure,” stashed her track with him at the very end of Pageant Material.
“I thought, Willie Nelson is an artist that’s an album artist. He’s not a single artist. I don’t consider myself like that either, so I thought this was a really nice, special moment and a treat for the people who make it to the very end of the record,” she tells Spin. “Like, the record is over and slowly this Western world — a kind of hazy, stoned-sounding Western world — arises as a surprise at the end.”
