Kacey Musgraves is still soaking in the buzz from her stunning third studio album, Golden Hour — her third Top 10 on the Billboard 200 — and she’s finally released a music video to accompany it. The country-pop star dropped the moody video for “Space Cowboy” Monday morning (Apr. 30), and it’s guaranteed to do some major heartstring tugging.
The poignant lyrics of “Space Cowboy” paint a coming-to-terms ode to a former love, so Musgraves is appropriately alone during the majority of the clip. The visuals reflect her lingering pain, although she’s accepted her claim that “When a horse wants to run/ Ain’t no sense in closing the gate,” accompanied by images of the singer singing at sunset in an empty house intercut with flashbacks of past arguments and strife.
By the end of the clip, viewers see Musgraves’ aforementioned cowboy riding away through a barren town, followed by ballooning, stormy clouds. In contrast, the singer completes the song sitting in a windowsill, her silhouette outlined by a rising sun. Albeit subtle, the video portrays the confidence and strength she’s gained during the process of letting go.
Musgraves just performed at Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, California Saturday (Apr. 28) and will soon be supporting Harry Styles on the last leg of his first solo headlining tour before embarking on her own headlining Oh, What a World Tour.
