Just over a month since winning album of the year at the 2019 Grammys, Kacey Musgraves returned to an award show stage tonight (March 14). This time it was Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater for the iHeartRadio Music Awards, where the singer-songwriter performed the uplifting closing ballad from last year’s Golden Hour.
Musgraves sang “Rainbow” at the Grammys as well, but this time, it was a little different. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin joined her onstage and played piano, representing the only instrumental backing. It was really all she needed, as Musgraves, perched atop a large florescent rainbow, delivered a tender vocal performance fitting of the track’s uplifting message: “You hold tight to your umbrella, darlin’ I’m just tryin’ to tell ya, That there’s always been a rainbow hangin’ over your head.”
Musgraves took home an iHeartRadio Music Award as well — her collaborative cover of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” (performed alongside Harry Styles) won the socially-voted trophy for best cover song.
