Kacey Musgraves is celebrating the holidays this year with her very own special. The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show will air via Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 29, and during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, the singer gave some insight into the special.
“There’s a little bit of everything,” she tells Fallon. “I’ve never done anything like this before. I’m a triple threat now, so just log that away. Dancing, singing, there’s comedy bits, there’s acting. It was a lot. My actual band, they played all the music in the special. I have a lot of wonderful guests that come and join me. It’s my take on the old-school Judy Garland Christmas, Cher show type thing brought to life in a modern way.”
Ahead of sharing a clip of one segment featuring comedian and actor Fred Armisen, Musgraves raved about working with Fallon’s former Saturday Night Live colleague. “It was absolutely excruciatingly painful trying to not laugh in the scene with him,” she says. “He’s a genius. We did a great scene together.”
During her seven-minute chat on the Tonight Show couch, Musgraves discussed performing with Willie Nelson at the 2019 CMA Awards, visiting Dollywood and her initial reaction when she finds out about any Grammy nomination. (She has six Grammy wins to her name, including her 2019 album of the year win for Golden Hour.)
“Absolute insanity. You’re just like, ‘Wait, hold on. Is this really happening?’” she says of learning about Grammy nods. “I went into Golden Hour being so excited that I made something that felt different for me. I just got a kick out of the fact that it got nominated with these gigantic albums. It was kind of the underdog in a lot of ways.”
