As we head into the Oscars this weekend (Feb. 24) with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s duet “Shallow” up for best original song, country newcomers Jimmie Allen and Abby Anderson share their take on the poignant ballad from A Star Is Born.
Allen and Anderson’s cover of “Shallow,” released today (Feb. 22), includes an accompanying video where Allen shares his initial hesitation to sing a song that’s so intimate. By the time the song comes to an end, he and Anderson’s chemistry is undeniable as they trade Gaga and Cooper’s verses to recreate the stirring performance.
The video, directed by Austin Peckham, showcases each singer going about his or her day before meeting in the studio to perform the powerful track. Allen’s soulful singing style accompanied by Anderson’s stunning harmonies unite for a memorable cover.
Allen also raved about A Star Is Born, noting that it was one of his favorite films from last year. “The performance of this song in the film really moved me as an artist,” Allen said in a statement. “I had chills! Getting to cover ‘Shallow’ with my good friend Abby was such a cool experience. She’s such an incredible vocalist.”
Allen recently released his second single to country radio. The feel-good “Make Me Wanna” follows his debut Billboard Country Airplay No. 1 “Best Shot.” He’s currently on the road with Kane Brown’s Live Forever tour before he joins Chris Young and Rascal Flatts later this year for tour support.
Anderson, meanwhile, released her five-song EP I’m Good last year. The project included her powerful debut single “Make Him Wait.” She will support Rob Thomas’ on his Chip Tooth Smile tour which kicks off in May.
“Shallow,” written by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt, will compete with “All the Stars” (Black Panther), “I’ll Fight” (RBG), “The Place Where Lost Things Go” (Mary Poppins Returns), and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs) for best original song at the 91st Annual Academy Awards, which air Sunday night (Feb. 24) on ABC.
