Jenna Paulette embraces traditional and contemporary country influences throughout her stirring new song “Midnight Cowboy,” which Billboard premieres the video for today (Sept. 20). Featured on her debut EP Modern Cowgirl, Volume 1, the song features Paulette’s captivating vocals alongside soaring pedal steel, delicate acoustic guitar and an ear-grabbing beat.
For her new EP, also out Sept. 20, the singer enlisted the help of producers Brad Hill (Maren Morris, Lucie Silvas, Brett Young) and Lee Holland. Both helped the singer-songwriter embrace descriptive storytelling and find her voice.
“The song really is a love song that goes out to anyone who has someone they love on the road,” Paulette tells Billboard of “Midnight Cowboy,” which she penned with Will Bundy and Mark Trussell. “Whether they are rodeoing, touring, driving a truck, away on business, whatever it may be… it’s a song about holding down the home front and keeping a light on in the window.”
The stunning video for “Midnight Cowboy” was filmed in Marathon, Texas, during a weekend where Paulette shot three other music videos for her new EP. The singer enlisted the help of several friends in each video and “Midnight Cowboy” stars former professional bull rider Ross Edmonds.
“We used local west Texas boys to play roles in each video because I didn’t want actors, I wanted the real thing,” the Texas native explains. “Ross, who played the cowboy in this video, is the definition of the real deal. He manages the Stringfellow Ranch down south of Marfa, Texas, and he was so easy to work with. We had a lot in common, which made the shoot chemistry so wonderful. I’m so proud of the way this video turned out because I feel like it represents the world I grew up in and love so much, and it honors that Western way of life.”
