At an album listening event in Nashville on Tuesday (March 12), Owen gave industry attendees a preview of some of the music from his upcoming album. Prefacing “Made For You,” a heartfelt ballad penned by Joey Hyde, Benjy Davis and Neil Medley, the singer revealed that Ray personally requested he perform the song at his wedding.
“After I played this song at St. Jude Children’s Hospital a few weeks ago with Michael Ray on stage and Randy Owen and Clint Black, Michael came up to me afterwards and said, ‘Hey, man. I don’t know how to say this. Would you mind playing that song at Carly and I’s wedding?’” Owen recalled. “I said, ‘Holy shit. Yeah, I’d love to!’ And then I realized: ‘I’m a wedding singer now.’”
While the thought of being a wedding singer made him laugh, in all seriousness, Owen said it is a testament to the song’s powerful message.
“As funny as that is, it really is a true testament to…I mean, the fact that I’m going to be singing it at two singers’ weddings with a song that honestly means something to them,” he said. “This is a powerful song about life and love.”
Owen himself gravitated to the song the moment he heard it. He’s been playing it in his live show for well over a year now and said “Made For You” made him reflect on his relationship with girlfriend Erica Hartlein, who he is expecting a daughter with in six weeks.
“I’m super thankful for her and this song hit me at the right time because having a child before it, being divorced and going through all that, [I was] wondering what love’s all about,” he confessed. “This song, ‘Made For You,’ is about being made for somebody and I definitely feel that Erica and I are made for each other and we found each other.”
In addition to “Made For You,” Owen’s album will include a collaboration with Kid Rock on a song called “Grass Is Always Greener” as well as another feature from singer and actress Lele Pons on “Senorita.”
