Gary Allan‘s latest single “Hangover Tonight,” his 24th top 40 record on the Billboard Country Singles chart, was an opportunity for the country star to look to the past for inspiration. “I feel like this is the fourth or fifth time I’ve reinvented myself, or tried to push myself to do different things,” says the singer. “It is kind of ’50s and ’60s Motown. I was in rockabilly bands my whole life, and to me it was just a throwback to my youth writing with these guys. It was a lot of fun.”

Allan co-wrote the track with acclaimed songwriter Chris Stapleton (who also did backing vocals), Cary Barlowe and Jesse Frasure and in the video for the song (from Allan’s tenth studio album, scheduled for release later in 2015), a retro-styled Allan is surrounded by his band and an all-female production crew.
