Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood stopped to chat with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala, where they discussed their first memories of that night’s honoree Dolly Parton and their tribute performance later on in the evening.
Speaking of the first time she remembers seeing Parton and why she is so inspired by the music icon, Yearwood recalls watching Parton as a little kid on The Porter Wagoner Show and loving her. “I’ve loved her voice — she’s amazing as a songwriter and as an actor, and she’s just been a role model for women and men,” Yearwood says.
Asked what their favorite Dolly Parton songs are, Yearwood names “Old Flames Can’t Hold a Candle to You,” which she and Brooks performed together later that evening. “It’s a really romantic song and it’s us,” she says of the track. “It fits us and we’re gonna sing that tonight.”
Posed with the question of whether or not they are nervous performing the song in front of Dolly herself, Brooks replies with a laugh, “I’ll tell you how nerve-wracking it is. When they said pick the song, I said, let’s do ‘Old Flames.’ Talked [Trisha] into doing it as a duet, I backed out of the duet, and now it’s all her kinda doing it, so it’s great.”
Yearwood adds, “It’s all about honoring her and nobody’s here going, ‘I can do this better than Dolly.’ She set the bar, so we’re just trying to pay tribute and say thank you for all this wonderful work.”
