Florida Georgia Line got back to basics at the 2018 CMT Music Awards, busting out the banjo and some whistling for a live performance of their recently released “Simple.”
Playing in the midst of an enthusiastic crowd — who had phones out and recording despite the lyrics of the song, which gently chide people who “live on Instagram / Worry ‘bout who all gives a damn” — FGL indulged in their indie folk-rock side with a tune that brought to mind the homespun charm of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
Even if the sound of “Simple” is a far cry from their smash Hot Country Songs chart-topper “Meant to Be” ft. Bebe Rexha, it sounded comfortable for the genre-blending country duo (and looked comfortable too — hey, a Stetson hat can be country and hipster at the same time).
