Gospel is a fashionable texture in the mainstream at the moment. You’ll hear it in hip-hop (Kanye West, Chance the Rapper) and dance music (Robert Hood). At the recent CMT Music Awards, Carrie Underwood performed her “Church Bells” single with help from a full gospel choir.
The Eli Young Band acknowledge the genre’s popularity on their new song “Saltwater Gospel.” “Every Sunday I see people filing in through those front doors,” Mike Eli sings. “Got a cross up on the steeple, it’s time to praise the Lord.”
But in a move that would make Kenny Chesney and legions of surfers proud, Eli heads to the beach to find his salvation: “When I go down and sink my feet in the water/ And I soak up that sun, and I watch it set/ I can feel the power of the saltwater gospel/ I’m as close to God as I can get.”
Ross Copperman, Nicolle Gaylon and Ashley Gorley co-wrote “Saltwater Gospel.” Copperman co-wrote three songs on the band’s Turn It On EP, which came out last year. Gorley also has a credit on that release.
Eli Young Band’s last album, 10,000 Towns, arrived in 2014. Lead single “Drunk Last Night” was a No. 1 hit on the Country Airplay chart.
