This year’s MusiCares Person of the Year honoree Dolly Parton stopped to speak with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet ahead of the tribute event on Friday (Feb. 8), where she discussed why the honor means so much to her, what advice she would give to her younger self and her relationship with her goddaughter Miley Cyrus, and more.
Speaking of receiving the Person of the Year honor, Parton tells Briggs that it feels like a lifetime of work getting to this point. “MusiCares is such a big deal for charity, and it’s for such a good cause,” she says. “So just the fact that all these great artists are gonna be singing my songs and raise a lot of money… I’m just gonna get to sit back and enjoy it!”
Asked what advice she would give to her younger self, knowing what she knows now, Parton replies with a laugh, “I would just say buckle up — you’re in for the ride of your life, girl!” She adds that she has been so lucky to see so many of her dreams come true, and that this has really been “like a dream” for her.
The singer also opens up about her admiration for her goddaughter Miley Cyrus, telling Billboard that she loves her because she is “such a pro,” adding that Cyrus knows who she is, and that she is such a talent. “A lot of people don’t realize just how much talent she really does have,” Parton explains. “There’s nothing Miley can’t do, and nothing I wouldn’t do for Miley.”
