Canadian singer Dean Brody’s latest video for “Black Sheep,” which Billboard is exclusively premiering today (July 29), speaks to the outsiders. Dedicated to those who go against the grain, Brody penned “Black Sheep” from personal experience.
With a pounding beat, yearning vocals and inspiring lyrics, “Black Sheep” serves as the title track to Brody’s most recent EP, released in April. The singer wrote the song by himself and it was inspired, in part, by his decision to pursue a career in the music industry.
“I’ve often felt like an outsider, from a young age in the church, but also as a dreamer and wandering musician,” Brody tells Billboard. “I think a lot of us feel like we’re just not fitting in to all the groups of people we hang out with.”
The song speaks to Brody’s experiences with organized religion, but is also about “those moments in life where you just don’t feel like you quite belong where you’re at.”
A 2017 Canadian Country Music Awards fan’s choice winner, Brody adds that “Black Sheep” is also about everyone’s need for acceptance.
“This song is about our life journeys, and how all of us long to be accepted and have a sense of belonging out in the world. Once we find that place of belonging — it is about celebrating it,” he says.
Well respected in the Canadian country music scene, Brody has amassed 17 Canadian Country Music Awards, two Juno Awards and the Jeff Walker global country artist of the year award, presented by the CMA in 2018. His latest EP Black Sheep follows his sixth studio album Beautiful Freakshow.
