Just a few days after adding three Grammy awards to his growing collection, Chris Stapleton stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert for a smooth, performance of his ode to intoxicated thoughts, “Drunkard’s Prayer,” on Tuesday night (Jan. 30).
To add to the solemn vibe of the track, Stapleton stood on the dimly-lit stage, guitar in hand, to croon heart-wrenching lines like, “I wish that I could go to church but I’m too ashamed of me/ I hate the fact it takes a bottle to get me on my knees.” The stripped-down version of the song allowed Stapleton’s voice to carry, and the vulnerability of the song’s lyrics to really shine.

“Drunkard’s Prayer” is a track off From A Room: Volume 2, Stapleton’s follow-up to From A Room: Volume 1, which took home the Grammy for best country album at Sunday’s awards. Along with best country album, the Kentucky-born singer also won best country solo performance for “Either Way,” and best country song for “Broken Halos.” Just before his Colbert performance, Stapleton announced the second leg of his All-American Road Show Tour, which will kick off in May and run through November.
