If you’ve ever wondered “What Happens In A Small Town,” Brantley Gilbert and Lindsay Ell are here to tell you. The singer-songwriters teamed up to release a new country-rock ballad ahead of Gilbert’s forthcoming 2019 album.
Big Machine Label Group founder Scott Borchetta was the one who suggested that Ell be featured on the new heartbreak-laced track.
“He was like, ‘Dude, I’m listening to some Lindsay Ell stuff, and it’s incredible,'” Gilbert recently recalled to Bobby Bones. “My mother-in-law and brother-in-law wanted to go to the Opry, and we went and Lindsay was playing there that night. And, then it just clicked when Scott brought that up. I was like, man, that’s it without a question.”
The song, which he told Taste of Country was inspired by his past with wife Amber Cochran, has a mellow acoustic opening that is later met with a punchy chorus: ”What happens in a small town/ Stays in a small town/ Every back road we’ve ever gone down/ Friday night bleachers, Sunday pews/ Ain’t a county line mile without a memory of you.” The tune is continually pushed along by Gilbert’s gritty vocals, which are layered with Ell’s bright, wandering harmonies as well as her own guitar skills.
The new track dropped alongside a lyric video that cycles through pictures of country town locations. Check it out below.
