“I like to think that there is a change that is happening in country,” Jennifer Nettles told Billboard earlier this year. “And I can definitively say that Brandy Clark has been a big part of that change.”
A lot of people say things like that about Clark. “She’s such a brilliant writer,” Marci Braun, music director at WUSN Chicago, declared earlier this year. Jay Joyce — who has helped Eric Church, Little Big Town and the Brothers Osborne achieve hits — gave Clark a tacit endorsement by agreeing to produce her sophomore album, Big Day in a Small Town.
That record arrives this Friday, and Clark recently unveiled another song that will appear on the album. She wrote “Homecoming Queen” with Luke Laird and Shane McAnally. Clark has a long history of collaboration with McAnally: He worked on much of her acclaimed debut, 12 Stories, and he also has a credit on “Girl Next Door,” Clark’s latest single. This week, “Girl Next Door” reached No. 39 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
