Brandon Stansell’s new single “Top Shelf” has the country singer/songwriter savoring every moment of a new relationship. The infectious tune showcases the rising artist and LGBTQ+ advocate’s sultry falsetto coupled with polished pop-country production and an infectious beat bound to get the feet tapping.
Comparing a good relationship to that of top-shelf liquor, “Top Shelf” — which Billboard premieres below — is a feel-good summer anthem with clever wordplay that draws the listener in. Penned with longtime writing partner and friend MYLEN, Stansell also enlisted his friend to produce the song.
“‘Top Shelf’ is all about savoring the moment when you find the right one — it’s like enjoying fine whiskey,” Stansell tells Billboard. “It’s about being good to yourself by choosing someone who’s good for you. When I sit down to write, I often think about how I can present an idea in a new way that is both entertaining and clever. And, I’m obviously biased, but I think we did that with ‘Top Shelf.’”
He adds, “Coming off of my last single, ‘Hometown,’ I wanted to share a lighter side of myself. The song is fun and sexy — a summer-ready single I am so excited for people to hear!”
CMT premiered Stansell’s video for previous single “Hometown” last year. The clip addressed LGBTQ+ themes, making it the first time the station hosted a video on the subject matter. A longtime fan of country music, Stansell grew up watching CMT. As he got older, though, he realized the genre didn’t openly embrace gay artists. At the 2019 Concert for Love & Acceptance presented by GLAAD and Ty Herndon in Nashville in early June, Stansell told Billboard how important it was that CMT premiered the video for his coming out video, “Hometown.”
“I loved that station and the older I got…the more I realized that I wasn’t welcomed in this place that I love. That’s a tough thing to have to go through,” he said. “To now be 30 and making music and having CMT reach their hand out to me and say, ‘We’re going to give you a shot,’ is life-changing and a dream come true.”
