Midland and Kacey Musgraves provide the common link in two upstart awards events that unveiled their final ballots in the past week.
Both acts are present in the same category — innovation in music, creative/artist — in the second annual Innovation in Music Awards, slated for June 3 at the Westin Hotel in Nashville. They’re also in the running as songwriters in the Association of Independent Music Publishers’ third annual AIMP Nashville Awards on May 7 at the Ryman Auditorium. Musgraves’ “Space Cowboy,” co-written with Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, is a finalist for AIMP Nashville publisher’s pick, while Midland’s “Drinkin’ Problem” — which McAnally and Josh Osborne penned with group members Jess Carson, Cameron Duddy and Mark Wystrach — is one of seven copyrights up for AIMP Nashville song of the year.
McAnally paces the AIMP field with four nominations total, while Maren Morris appears on the list three times. Seven more songwriters are double nominees.
No individual is present on the IMA ballot more than once, though two companies are represented in more than one category: Universal Music Group, with nominations in three areas, and SiriusXM, which appears twice on the slate.
