With the late XXXTentacion winning best soul/R&B album at tonight’s (Oct. 9) American Music Awards for his 17 album, his mother Cleopatra Bernard took the stage to accept the award on her son’s behalf.
“I’m so nervous, you guys,” Bernard admitted upon reaching the stage, after being introduced by presenter Kane Brown. After some encouragement from the audience, she approached the podium to give a short address on behalf of her son, born Jahseh Onfroy, who died at age 20 this June after being shot to death.
“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of my son,” she began. “I would like to thank the AMAs, his fans, and to everyone who made this possible. Thank you guys so much, I appreciate it.” Getting choked up, she departed the stage from there.
XXXTentacion is also nominated for best new artist at this year’s AMAs.
