Victoria Monét spoke with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs and Lele Pons on the red carpet at Billboard’s Women in Music event on Thursday night (Dec. 12), discussing how she handles online negativity, her friendship with Ariana Grande and what she admires about her, as well as what fans can expect from Normani‘s upcoming album.
Asked how she handles dealing with cancel culture and online trolling, Monét tells Billboard that it all comes down to surrounding herself in real life with people she trusts and people whose opinions she values.
“The internet sometimes can be a venting tool for people and you can’t really just take it personal,” she says. “And you just keep moving, and you stay confident, and do what makes you happy out in the real world.”
In the interview, Monét is also asked about her friendship with Grande, and how they keep each other humble in this industry.
“I think that woman is humble, regardless of if I was in her life or not,” replies Monét. “But I think it just comes down to really having a true friendship and making each other laugh, and sharing genuine moments with each other and I don’t know if I even think about holding her accountable to be humble, I just compliment her as much as I can, make sure I’m supportive, and she does the same for me and so, it’s really great.”
When asked what her favorite moment with Grande has been, Monét has a tough time picking just one, noting that the entire past year has been memorable.
“She really turned a lot of tragedy and sorrow into bliss and was able to do that through music and not through just outside things,” explains Monét. “She used her art to turn positivity, to make positivity, so I think that was really nice to watch and have the front seat for. And she deserves the world and I think she has it.”
Monét also discusses working with Normani on her new album, stating that she is so important to black culture and to women around the world.
“I don’t know if I can say anything [about the album],” she adds. “I don’t want to get in trouble. But I do know that she’s working very hard and she’s very focused, and she’s gonna make something that’s gonna blow the world away.”
