Tyler, The Creator is set to receive the cultural influence award in partnership with lifestyle brand Rock the Bells at the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards.
Hip-hop icon and Rock the Bells founder LL Cool J is slated to present the award to the “Earfquake” rapper/producer. The event airs Tuesday (Oct. 5) at 9 p.m. ET on BET.
“I am proud to honor Tyler, The Creator, with the first-ever Rock The Bells cultural influence award, which celebrates an artist who continues to break down the conventional boundaries of hip hop culture,” LL Cool J said in a statement.
The award aims to recognize “a younger, innovative, otherworldly artist that has significantly impacted the culture — while uplifting their community,” according to a release from BET. Recipients are selected through an editorial process involving input from LL Cool J.
“This award will celebrate innovative hip hop artists who are shaking the industry, like Tyler, The Creator, and who will carry the hip hop torch for generations to come,” adds Connie Orlando, EVP specials, music programming & music strategy at BET.
Tyler, The Creator is in the running for four awards at the upcoming show: best live performer, hip-hop artist of the year, hip hop album of the year for Call Me If You Get Lost, and producer of the year.
Other multi-nominated artists include Cardi B, Lil Durk and Megan Thee Stallion, each of whom has nine nods.
