Whether for the legendary performances of the night (Beyonce and Adele, anyone?) or the exciting red carpet sartorial choices, all eyes are on The Grammys this Sunday. And thanks to a whole host of newcomers–from Kelsea Ballerini to Marren Morris–there’s plenty of original style–and fresh stylists–to check out.
In the case of three-time, Grammy-nominated duo and winner of Best Dance Recording, The Chainsmokers, the stylist behind Alex Pall and Drew Taggart’s red carpet looks is Siena Montesano, a friend of the “Closer” hit-makers since 2013.
“At first, I wasn’t able to style them since I currently work full-time as an assistant to Karla Welch (who styles Justin Bieber and Hailee Steinfeld) but decided to jump in and dress the guys on my own knowing they were going to have a huge year ahead,” says Montesano.
In between fittings, Billboard exclusively spoke with Montesano, to learn about the challenges of dressing a group and what it takes to build a stylish reputation on the red carpet.
This is The Chainsmokers’ first year as Grammy nominated artists. Did that play into your styling process at all?
I knew that it was going to be one of their biggest moments yet. Beyond being invited, they have three nominations (Best New Artist, Best Pop Duo/Performance, and Best Dance Recording) and they’re at the tipping point of success right now, so that momentum was certainly a factor.
What’s the difference between styling a duo versus a solo artist?
For a duo, it’s important to make them both stand out together. You also have to keep in mind that they’re different people, different sizes, and what they’re comfortable in is different. But Alex and Drew have known each other for a long time, and I’ve known them both for a long time, so our friendship certainly helps aide that process.
You’ve styled them for the AMAs, the Grammy’s, and will dress The Chainsmokers for the upcoming Brit Awards. Are there different tones for different award shows?
Not really. What they look good in and what they’re comfortable in is important. The Grammy’s and Brits are black tie carpet events, but in music, you have room to do what you want, although I still want them to stay elevated. They’re not at the point fashion-wise where they can do whatever they want and get away with it, but I think they’re close to being able to get there. Over time everyone will see us get more out of the box and a little more fun and crazy. But for the Grammys and the Brits, they’re both dressy, important carpets and I think we want to stay true to what is elegant and classy.
Okay, so what are The Chainsmokers wearing tonight?
Drew’s favorite article of clothing is a distressed t-shirt, flannel and chucks, while Alex will wear things that are a little more bright. But tonight, both of them are wearing Spring off-the-runway Dior Homme and vintage watches from La Californienne.
Alex is wearing a faint gray textured plaid suit has a criss-cross black detailing throughout the pant and the jacket. Compared to his AMA’s outfit, this Dior look is an ultra skinny fit suit. We paired the suit with a pleated bibbed black dress shirt and black brogue dress shoes all from Dior.
Drew is dressed in a white slim fit dress shirt with a black felted pattern. The full black suit jacket has a non-traditional button closure. Instead, it’s a modern, silver buckle clasp that holds the jacket together. He’s wearing a black skinny fit suit trouser with a crop pant and a pair of black patent leather dress shoes from Dior.
