Taylor Swift won best solo in the world at the 2020 NME Awards in London on Wednesday (Feb. 12), and surprised everyone by showing up in person to accept her award.
Her middle finger trophy and glass of wine in hand, she addressed the high-energy crowd with a joke. “This is my first time at the NME Awards and I just feel like everyone here is so shy, so reserved. It’s like, ‘Are you guys going to have any fun tonight? Are you going to come out of your shells, at all?’ Oh, wait — no, this is like the craziest awards show I have ever been to, and I love it so much.”
Swift last took home an NME award in 2016 (she sent in a video for her acceptance speech). This year, she accepted her trophy from Robyn, who was honored as songwriter of the decade.
Other winners of the night included included Slipknot for best band in the world, Lana Del Rey for best album in the world, Clairo for new act and FKA Twigs for British solo act. The 1975 won two awards, British band and an honorary award for innovation. Courtney Love also received the honorary Icon award.
