Sheila E. spoke with Billboard on the red carpet at the 2020 Grammy Awards, discussing the evening’s Prince tribute, why it’s so important to still honor his legacy, and why she’d love to work with Bruno Mars one day.
Speaking of the Prince tribute, which took place later that evening at the Grammys, Sheila E. tells Billboard that she worked with Usher and FKA Twigs to put together a three-song medley. “It’s something that we’ve wanted to do and it’s part of a celebration that we’re doing in a couple of days, as well,” she adds.
Asked why it’s so important to continue to honor Prince’s legacy, she replies, “His legacy is his music. He’s left us so many wonderful and amazing songs and why not celebrate him with the music that he’s left us? And it’s just hard to believe that he’s still gone, that’s the hard part about it. So yeah, we have to celebrate.”
In the interview, Sheila E. also chats about wanting to collaborate with Bruno Mars, noting that she loves that he is an entertainer. “I like working with entertainers ,like with Bruno, with Usher, where they can sing, dance, perform, write music, play instruments. I love working with those kinds of artists,” she explains. “I grew up with my dad being the same and so that’s why it’s so special.”
