Backstage at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 20), Salt-N-Pepa discussed performing at the event, their upcoming Las Vegas residency and the influence they have on current music.
The trio performed with En Vogue at the awards show to commemorate 30 years since they became the first female rap act to have a top 20 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Push It.” Speaking of the song, Cheryl “Salt” James says, “It’s iconic, isn’t it? It’s amazing. We broke a lot of barriers…closing [the Billboard Awards] at this stage in our lives is just amazing. It’s incredible.”
Sandra “Pepa” Denton shares, “We’re selling out on our I Love the 90’s tour and then, of course, we have our residency coming up in Vegas. A lot of amazing things for us.”
Asked what fans can expect from the residency, Denton responds with a laugh, “We gonna be pushing it, we gonna be talking about some sex!”
“It’s gonna be a journey through the ’90s,” James adds, “an experience of art and music and fashion through the ’90s.”
Salt-N-Pepa also discuss the lasting impact their music has had, with Denton stating that she recognizes when current artists sample their music. “It’s an amazing feeling to know that you made timeless music and it’s just here to stay,” she says.
