Rita Ora spoke with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday (Oct. 9), chatting about her forthcoming album Phoenix, what keeps her inspired, and working with Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX.
Speaking of her sophomore LP Phoenix, which drops November 23, Ora tells Billboard, “This is my first actual global release of a record. I’ve never actually ever had the opportunity to do that before, in my career.”
“I’ve always had like features and done films, and things like that,” she continues, “But this is the first time I get to pour my heart out, and I’m…not nervous, I’m just a bit excited, but a little bit like I don’t know what’s going to happen…it’s the first time I’m like letting go, so, we’ll see.”
While Ora doesn’t share too many details about the album, she does tease that there are some “incredible features” on it.
Asked what keeps her motivated as a musician, Ora notes that she has the “biggest inspirations ever” and that she looks up to women who are hard workers.
“I’m addicted to working,” she explains, “So Jennifer Lopez is one of my idols. She’s so hardworking and gorgeous…and my mum. And I just love to have things to do…I’m just like, yeah, let’s go, let’s go, let’s do songs, let’s do films, let’s do movies, TV shows!”
In the interview, Ora also discusses working with Cardi B, Bebe Rexha, and Charli XCX on her song “Girls,” stating that she loved doing something with them as a team. “It felt really real and natural,” she says, “And I love Cardi so much. I think she’s incredible. And Bebe and Charli. I just wanted to work with artists that are themselves, and those women are themselves, and that’s it, that’s all it’s all about.”
