Speaking with Billboard backstage at the 2019 Women in Music event, Rapsody shared some powerful wisdom she once received from her grandmother, praised Lauryn Hill and other female artists for inspiring her, and revealed which positive changes she has seen in the music industry.
Asked to share the best piece of wisdom she has received from a woman in her life, Rapsody told Billboard that her grandmother once told her to give people flowers while they can still smell them.
“I incorporate that in my life by celebrating…other women, especially my sisters in hip-hop,” she said. “We do love each other, and we do accept each other, and there is a beautiful village. So I take that, and I try to give flowers to everyone in my life, whether I love them, or I don’t know them, I appreciate their art or just them as a person. I think that’s the most important thing we can do is be rooted in love in that way.”
In the interview, she was also asked if there were any female artists she wished to honor. Calling Lauryn Hill her biggest inspiration in music, Rapsody also named Hill as “one of the most talented artists to ever grace this Earth” who taught her about “truth and honesty, and being unapologetically yourself.”
Rapsody also named the likes of Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Lady of Rage, and Rah Digga, praising them for opening doors for artists like her to express themselves. She also mentioned Cicely Tyson and Phylicia Rashad, noting that they taught her “how to be classy, and how to be proud, and to shine your light and be strong women across the board.”
