Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince airs Tuesday night (April 21) on CBS to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the legendary artist’s death.
Named after the opening track from his 1984 seminal blockbuster soundtrack Purple Rain, the special casts a star-studded lineup to rewind through Prince‘s beloved hits. Maya Rudolph will bring out her all-female Prince cover band, Princess, while hosting the two-hour tribute event, which was filmed Jan. 28 — two days after the 62nd annual Grammy Awards and a month-plus before the coronavirus pandemic prohibited such large gatherings.
The show features performances by Beck, Gary Clark Jr., Common, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Foo Fighters, H.E.R., Juanes, John Legend, Chris Martin, Miguel, Morris Day and The Time, Sheila E., St. Vincent, Mavis Staples, Prince’s Grammy-winning band The Revolution and Usher. Fred Armisen, Naomi Campbell, Misty Copeland, FKA Twigs and Jimmy Jam will also make special appearances. Sheila E., Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis serve as the special’s co-musical directors.
Although he just hung up his Grammy producer title this year, Ken Ehrlich returns as the executive producer for the Prince special. “Prince is special. He probably did 12 TV appearances over his career. I did five of them. I think it’s going to do very well because the audience that has grown around him since his death is equal to or greater than the audience that loved him when he was alive,” Ehrlich said in an interview with Billboard ahead of his final Grammys. “There’s no 15-year old who doesn’t know who Prince is.”
From the Grammy website’s spoiler alerts, fans already know Miguel was tapped to cover “I Would Die 4 U,” while H.E.R. takes on “The Beautiful Ones” and the special’s title track “Let’s Go Crazy” with Gary Clark Jr., who’ll also perform a Sign “O” The Times deep cut “The Cross.” John Legend will revive “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which made noise in 1990 with its Sinéad O’Connor power-ballad version that topped the Billboard Hot 100 on April 20, 1990 — 30 years ago this week.
Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince broadcasts from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and will stream via CBS All Access.
