The 2020 Premio Lo Nuestro, hosted by Thalia, Pitbull, and Alejandra Espinosa, took place Thursday night (Feb. 20) with Daddy Yankee sweeping seven out of his 12 nominations including artist of the year and song of the year with “Con Calma” ft. Snow. He was followed by Bad Bunny, who nabbed five awards.
Spanish singer Raphael received the excellence award, Alejandro Fernandez was honored with the legado mariachi award and J Balvin received the icon award, stating he’s a dreamer overall. Other big winners of the night included Lunay, Sebastian Yatra, Christian Nodal, Rosalia, and Karol G.
While all the glitz and glam, performances, and big winners were captured on television via the Univision network, a lot of artists shared big news at the magenta carpet and press room.
Below, learn six things you did not see at the 32nd annual Premio Lo Nuestro awards.
1. NEW ALBUMS: Guaynaa, Mariah, Arcangel, Jesse & Joy, Pedro Capo, J Balvin and Anuel AA are some of the artists who confirmed they plan on releasing a new album in 2020. J Balvin, whose Colores is set for a March release, assured that fans are going to expect just that — a very colorful album. At the magenta carpet, Arcangel said he’s already working on the sequel of his album Historias De Un Capricornio.
2. MORE AWARDS: Many awards were not televised on Univision, but rather via a Facebook live from the press room. Some of the artists who received more awards backstage included Luis Fonsi, Pedro Capo, Christian Nodal, Lunay, Los Sebastianes and Sebastian Yatra, who could not contain his excitement and jumped on someone from his team in celebration.
3. ANUEL AA & KENDO KAPONI: Anuel AA strutted the magenta carpet with Puerto Rican composer and artist Kendo Kaponi; together, they talked to the press. This was Kaponi’s first-ever awards show since his arrest on charges of armed burglary and assault in Florida in 2018. In the press room, Kaponi admitted that his new single will be a collaboration with Anuel and that his dream is to one day work with Ricardo Arjona.
4. SONGS ON REPEAT: At the magenta carpet, many artists revealed to Billboard what their favorite song of the moment is. While Sofia Reyes promoted her single “Idiota,” Rauw Alejandro said his very own “Tattoo,” and so did Manuel Turizo with his Field-assisted “Borraxxa,” others did not hesitate to say Karol G’s “Tusa” as did Amandititita. Mariah not only showed some love to Jhay Cortez’s “Medusa” but also flaunted her favorite verse.
5. BROMANCE BACKSTAGE: The bromance was real backstage at the PLN press conference. As always, CNCO goofed around and celebrated their award for pop/rock group or duo of the year. While Sebastian Yatra was talking to the press, Rauw Alejandro passed by and yelled: “I love you Sebas!” Anuel AA also posed for the cameras with his manager Frabian Eli.
6. LIVING THE DREAM: It was the first time for many artists at the Premio Lo Nuestro awards including Farina, Rauw Alejandro, Jhay Cortez, Lunay, and Emilia Mernes, who was excited to share with Billboard that she will soon perform at Lollapalooza Argentina, where she will share the stage with artists like Guns N’ Roses and Lana Del Rey.
