Olivia Rodrigo needs no introduction — which is why the 2021 MTV VMAs merely counted down from 10 to introduce the star’s stellar set. As the second performer of the night, Rodrigo roared through her pop-punk smash “Good 4 U.”
After descending from the ceiling as larger-than-life virtual reality butterflies fluttered around her, Rodrigo was greeted by a slew of backup dancers all equally glammed up as she was. The performance served as an extension of the singer’s SOUR Prom livestream — as if she never left the party — complete with a confetti explosion during the song’s final chorus.
And no prom is complete without something reckless happening, which is why to wrap up the performance Rodrigo used the end of her mic to smash the camera lens.
Fortunately, all was forgiven, and fixed, when — moments later — Rodrigo reappeared on stage to accept the award for song of the year for her breakthrough smash “Drivers License” from the one and only Jennifer Lopez.
After thanking her fans, Rodrigo reminded every girl “writing songs on their bedroom floor” to chase their dreams. After all, she’s living proof of just what can happen.
