Old Dominion took home the trophy for vocal group of the year at the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday (Apr. 15), and they had a celebratory backstage chat with Billboard’s Kevan Kenney.
Speaking of the honor, lead vocalist Matthew Ramsey says, “We’ve known each other for so long and we’ve been a band for so long and been doing this in vans and empty bars and things like that so this is a very big deal.”
“This is vocal group of the year,” he continues. “We’ve watched this award year after year after year, so it means so much to us that all our hard work is really paying off. It’s a dream that’s coming to fruition.”
Asked how this milestone feels after being named country’s best underdog story by Billboard last August, guitarist Brad Tursi says that it has been “a long time of the underdog. It’s not been three years, four years, ten years. Our whole lives, this is what we’ve worked to do, so this is a big moment in our entire musical life.”
