Normani stopped to chat with Billboard backstage at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 20), discussing her performance with Khalid, meeting Janet Jackson and working with Missy Elliott on new music.
Speaking of her BBMA performance of “Live Lies” with Khalid, Normani said it was a “dream come true. It’s something that I’ve personally worked so incredibly hard for for the last six years and even before. Like me, watching the Billboard Music Awards as a little girl, and it actually coming to fruition, and the fact that I’m able to perform and say that I performed at the freaking Billboard Music Awards with one of my best friends, I consider, with a song that I genuinely love so much, it’s a dream come true.”
The singer also excitedly talked about meeting this year’s Icon Award recipient Janet Jackson. “I don’t get nervous when it comes to a lot of people,” she explained, “but Janet, I was really, really awkward…I feel like Janet and I have the same energy, or at least I like to think so. I’m really shy, and she’s really shy, as well.”
Normani went on to reveal what it’s been like working with Missy Elliott on new music, explaining that while the two have not yet been able to find time to get into a studio together, they did have a creative call a few weeks ago. “I told her kind of the direction that I was going for and immediately she’s like, ‘Yup, I got a record,’” Normani said.
“She was like, ‘I was gonna save it for myself, but, you know’…I feel like Missy Elliott is a representation of the music that I grew up listening to, and it is what made me fall in love with music…To be able to have someone who I looked up to for so long and kind of made me love music and has really paved the way to wanna be part of my project is mind-blowing.”
