MTV is hoping to air its annual Video Music Awards live from New York this summer.
“We’re exploring with government officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders on how to safely hold the 2020 VMAs at Barclays Center on August 30th,” an MTV spokesperson said in a statement to Billboard. “The health of everyone involved remains our number one priority. Additionally, we are working on several contingency plans to bring music’s biggest night to audiences everywhere.”
The network is also exploring virtual performances and an audience-free show, according to Variety, who first reported the news.
The development comes as New York, the epicenter of the coronavirus, is in the process of bouncing back following the pandemic’s economic and social impact. If MTV moves forward with their traditional production plan, the VMAs would return to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for the first time since 2013.
