Following her rousing performance at the 2019 VMAs, Missy Elliott returned onstage to receive her Michael Jackson video vanguard award.
Introduced by Cardi B, who praised her effusively, dubbing her a “living legend,” a humble Elliott took center-stage and reminisced on her storied career.
“This Michael Jackson video vanguard award means so much to me,” said the four-time Grammy-Award winner. “I have worked diligently for over two decades. And I never thought that I would be standing up here receiving this award. So it means so much to me. I promise you it doesn’t go unnoticed that the support and love that y’all shown me over the years.”
Elliott also credited past music video savants such as Janet Jackson and Busta Rhymes for their inspiration, before paying homage to her past collaborator, Aaliyah, who tragically passed away in 2001. “Aaliyah, I love you. We miss you,” she exclaimed.
Before walking off stage, Elliott dedicated her award to the dance community, glorifying them for their commitment and tireless work ethic. “When y’all get onstage with these artists, ‘y’all are not just props,” she opined. “Y’all are the icing on the cake. Y’all are the beat to the heart.”
