Obama shared a slideshow of two screenshots from a comical conversation about star power with her mom. “When your mom doesn’t think you’re a “real” celebrity…Tonight in Phoenix, I shared this text thread from my mom from #Grammys night, and I just had to share it with all of you. #TextsFromMom […],” she wrote.
Obama’s mom began by writing that her daughter was a “hit at the Grammys;” but when asked if she watched it, her mom had a more pressing question: “Did you meet any of the real stars or did you run right after you were done.”
In typical mom-daughter banter, Obama tried to assert that she did tell her, but also added, “And I Am A real star…by the way…” Mom replied with a simple “Yeah.”
Obama’s surprise appearance at the Grammys was one of the show’s highlights, appearing onstage beside host Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Jada Pinkett Smith. She also gave a small inspiring speech about what music meant to her: “From the Mo-Town records I wore out on the South Side, to the ‘who run the world’ songs that fueled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story, and I know that’s true for everybody here.”
