Mason Ramsey caught up with Billboard on the red carpet at the 2020 Grammy Awards, chatting about how he first joined forces with Lil Nas X for an “Old Town Road” remix and what went into putting together the all-star performance of the track at the Grammys.
Asked how he first ended up working on an “Old Town Road” remix with Lil Nas X, Ramsey tells Billboard that he got a call one night at around 10 PM from his manager, who informed him Lil Nas X wanted him to be on his song.
“So, I woke up, I got my clothes on, I ran out the door as fast I could, into the car, drove all the way there,” Ramsey says. “And then, we wrote a verse and then we recorded it and then that’s pretty much what happened.”
Ramsey is also asked what rehearsals were like for that epic Grammys performance. “We had BTS there. We had Lil Nas X, Billy Ray, Diplo, and we had a surprise thing and we’re just waiting for tonight, he replies. “It was like really fun and everybody knows their part. It was a little bit confusing at first, but I mean, we got into it and now we’re doing it like perfect.”
He adds that they spent four days rehearsing and that it got confusing at times because there were so many people involved. “But we got it down and we’re gonna perform it tonight,” says Ramsey. “It’s gonna be awesome.”
