If you thought Mariah Carey looked great in her recent TV special Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special, you’re not alone. The members of the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild had the same reaction. They nominated Carey’s makeup artists and hairstylists for the 8th annual MUAHS Guild Awards (that’s short for Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists).
OK, the MUAHS Guild Awards will never join the EGOT — good thing, it would make the acronym way too long — but in this world, they’re the Oscars.
Other double nominees include The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, which is nominated for best period and/or character makeup and best period hair styling and/or character hair styling in a television special, one hour or more live program series or movie for television. (Good luck fitting all that on a trophy.)
Commercials and music videos compete against each other in two categories. Justin Bieber’s “Anyone,” Lady Gaga’s “911” and The Weeknd’s “In Your Eyes” are nominated for best makeup in these areas, along with two commercials — Bud Light’s “Post Malone” spot at Super Bowl LV and Capitol One’s “John Travolta Santa/Hungry Man” spot.
NBC’s Saturday Night Live received four nominations, including one for best contemporary hair styling for an episode hosted by Adele, and another for best period hair styling and/or character hair styling for an episode hosted by Kristen Wiig. (Fill in your own joke about an episode hosted by Kristen Wiig being nominated for a hairstyling award.)
Other multiple nominees include Dancing With the Stars, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Hamilton, Ru Paul’s Drag Race and Bridgerton.
Winners in 21 categories across motion pictures, television, commercials and live theater will be honored at a virtual gala on April 3.
The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards are presented by the guild, IATSE Local 706. Here’s a full list of nominees.
