Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd caught up with Billboard’s Annie Reuter on the red carpet at the ACM Awards on Sunday (Apr. 7), to discuss Morris’ nomination for female artist of the year and her new musical project with Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby.
Asked how it feels to be up for the female artist of the year award, Morris tells Billboard, “It really just never gets old. It’s my peers that are nominating me each time, and it just makes me feel really welcomed by the community and I love my country music family so much, so to have them vote on this each time is a really big deal.”
Morris also chats about Highwoman, her new group with Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby, explaining that Carlile first reached out to her about it last year when she was playing around with the idea of creating a side group.

“I sent her some songs that I thought might work for it that I’ve written over the years that maybe necessarily didn’t work for my record as a solo project, but could be great in a really rootsy, almost Americana setting,” she says.
“Hopefully we’ll have something out in a few months, but it’s been really fun,” Morris adds. “It started as a side project and now we’re all kind of scared because it’s sounding so good, that we’re like holy crap, maybe this is something!”
