Maren Morris stopped to chat with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly on the red carpet at Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala on Saturday (Feb. 9), talking about the success of her song “The Middle,” performing with Taylor Swift, and what music is currently on her music playlist.
Asked if she ever imagined that “The Middle” was going to be such a success, Morris tells Billboard, “When I heard it, I knew that it was so catchy and infectious. Sarah Aarons, who wrote the song, I just fell in love with her voice on the demo, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of it.”
“Thank God I got on it because it was such a fun year with it,” she adds. “I got to go to South America and Australia and Europe and everyone knew the words. It was crazy.”
Morris also opens up about performing the song on stage with Swift in her hometown in Texas, calling the experience “transcendental.”
“I just got to watch [Swift] work all day,” Morris says. “I’m obsessed with her. I think she’s such a trailblazer. I love that she so gracefully was this huge country artist and then decided you know what, I’ve conquered this world. I’m gonna dip my toe in the pop waters, and it’s just so seamless because she’s a superstar.”
As for what is currently on her playlist, Morris notes that it is actually a lot of people nominated for Grammys this year. “I love Brandi Carlile,” she shares. “I love Camila Cabello’s album so much. I love her. I think she’s gonna take away a lot of hardware tomorrow. Chris Stapleton. I mean it’s kind of a little bit of everything.”
